Hide and seek 1#
Oil on jute 100 x 80cm 2021
My starting point for creating this work was an exploration and expression of Identity. The core question I wanted to address is: how does an individual find and establish their own place within a powerful and deep-rooted cultural tradition?
The all-encompassing Batik patterns in the painting are the visual language I use to represent this grand “cultural context.” It is the background of my identity, the soil in which I grew, and the tradition that shapes me. When the figure’s body nearly merges with these patterns, I am expressing the profound experience of being completely enveloped, nourished, and at times, even submerged by culture. This speaks to the first layer of identity: we are products of tradition, and our sense of self is defined by the culture we inhabit.
However, identity is more than just this. The bare, solid feet at the bottom of the painting are my insistence on, and my answer to, the existence of “the self.” They are the most unadorned, yet also the most irrefutable, mark of the individual in the entire piece. They represent our primal connection to the earth, our unique life experiences, and our firm, personal foothold that distinguishes us from any grand narrative. They are my declaration of the second layer of identity: regardless of how culture defines us, we remain independent and powerful individuals.
Therefore, to me, this painting ultimately depicts not a confusion of being lost in culture, but an ideal state of identity that I seek. True identity is not about choosing between “tradition” and “the self.” It is the ability to feel the solid ground beneath one’s feet, even while fully embracing one’s own culture. It is a symbiosis, a strength, and a confident self-awareness rooted in a deep heritage.
