《Janji Hijiau - The Green Mandate 》

In this series, each mechanical butterfly is more than a construct—
she is a state of being.
Delicate yet determined, she carries both the vulnerability of memory and the strength of resistance.
Built from porcelain and steel, her body bears weight while echoing fragility;
her wings, painted in batik motifs, carry the textures of land, culture, and longing.

In this piece, the butterfly glows in green—a quiet response to Malaysia’s National Green Technology Policy, introduced in 2009, and the country’s collective aspiration to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Her unit number, GRTP-2009, marks the beginning of this commitment;
her series number, 09-2050, traces the journey between pledge and fulfillment.

This is not a butterfly born of nature.
She is engineered—
to survive,
and to remind us:
Green is not an accessory.
It is a responsibility.
A mandate.

Etched in circuitry and batik,
her wings become a silent form of resistance.
That is her name: Janji Hijiau – The Green Mandate.

我用瓷与金属铸造它的身体,让它既有易碎的质感,也有承载重量的力量;

这就是她的名字:Janji Hijiau – The Green Mandate。

Purpose of Creation |

“The Green Mandate” was created from my intention to record a moment in Malaysia’s unfolding history. I do not seek to argue or take sides, but to preserve an image of a time when ideals, promises, and expectations converged. Through the language of mechanical form and cultural pattern, the work reflects how collective hopes are carried, remembered, and questioned. It is my way of ensuring that these fragments of Malaysia’s story remain visible to future eyes.

《Janji Hijiau》
