Reflection 2
Acrylic on Canvas 46cm x 46cm 2016
This painting is one from the four-part series, Reflection.
The core of this series is an exploration of the profound unity between our inner self and the outer world. In this piece, the crystal-clear glass swan symbolizes our pure, transparent inner world—our mind and spirit. It rests upon a piece of vividly coloured and intricately patterned Batik fabric. As a vessel of our culture and heritage, the Batik represents the external world we inhabit—the social environment and life experiences that shape our identity and influence our perceptions.
The key to the work lies in the act of reflection. The patterns of the external world, the Batik, are cast upon, absorbed, and flow across the curves of the glass swan, merging into a single, indivisible entity. This is not a mere surface reflection, but a metaphor for a deep process of internalization. It suggests that our inner self does not exist in isolation; it is continuously permeated and molded by the world around us. Everything we see, hear, and feel becomes an integral part of our spirit, just as the body of the swan embraces the soul of the Batik.
The Reflection series invites viewers to contemplate how the complexities of the external world can shape the clarity of the internal self. It is a meditation on how, through our interaction with the world, we can find a state of harmony and authenticity where the internal and external are one and the same. Such is life: our heart and our environment are, in essence, a unified whole.
