When I was studying restoration in Italy, my teacher once said: "An artist is not necessarily a suitable restorer."
The reason is simple: an artist needs style, while a restorer must not have one. During the retouching phase, you cannot paint like yourself; you must paint like the original creator. The brushstrokes, the colors, and the rhythm must all match.
Sitting in that classroom back then, I was quite silent. I came from a painting background, and my teacher often praised my color matching. To be honest, retouching was my favorite class because it was the stage closest to "painting."
After working for a while, I began to understand my teacher's words. An artist leaves themselves on the canvas; a restorer, however, must try to step back. When creating, you want others to recognize your work at a glance.
So, is an artist suitable for restoration? I later felt that it's not impossible, but one must learn one thing. An artist leaves their brushstrokes; a restorer must learn to set theirs aside.
"Not to disappear. Just don't be too loud."
