Years ago, a collector said to me: "Restoring a painting should only be the responsibility of the original artist; anyone else is considered illegitimate."
I didn't argue then, but questions surfaced: Is it still "restoration" when an artist fixes their own work, or is it "re-creation"? If the artist has passed, must the damaged works just slowly "wait for death"?
I once met a client who froze when the restoration estimate exceeded the painting's value. I accepted it anyway. The work deserved it; I didn't want a predecessor's life's work to die prematurely. My job is to buy time for the art.
"Tony, I could have sent this back to the artist, but I gave it to you instead. You respect the original state—the artist's own 'repair' often loses that original essence."
Sometimes, when I sit quietly before a painting, it ceases to be just oil, pigment, and canvas. It begins to breathe with life, carrying its stories, its years, and its forgotten moments.
Restoration is not mere mending; it is a possibility of rebirth. Those details that seemed to have vanished continue to silently tell the story of their existence.
When I return these works to their owners, I know it is more than a simple delivery—
"They have returned to their own time, to continue living."
