《Hak & Suara - The Right to Dissent 》
In this series, every mechanical butterfly begins with a paradox—fragile, yet fearless.
Like conviction itself: easy to break, but impossible to silence.
I built her with porcelain and steel—to echo both the vulnerability of faith and the structure of resistance.
Her wings are dyed yellow, etched with batik patterns native to this land—part memory, part voice.
This piece is a letter—a quiet remembrance—written for Bersih 3.0, the peaceful demonstration that flooded Malaysia’s streets in 2012.
That day, yellow was not fire, but footsteps.
Not violence, but resolve.
It became the color of integrity, a symbol of a generation’s yearning for fair elections.
This butterfly is not born of nature,
but assembled—like a country in reformation, like a people in search of clarity.
Small as she is, she does not break easily.
Beneath the yellow surface, some of leaves are painted in transparent varnish.
They shimmer under shifting light—sometimes seen, sometimes hidden—like layers of history,
like memories,
like the truths we only glimpse from certain angles.
This is her name: Hak&Suara .
A witness to a moment,
and the quiet light that moment still carries.
~Each echo carves a memory into time ~
我将她的身体以金属与陶瓷打造,让她在秩序中振翅;
蝴蝶虽小,却不轻易折断;
Purpose of Creation |
“The Right to Dissent” was born from my desire to record and reflect upon a pivotal moment in Malaysia’s democratic journey. I do not see this work as a political slogan, but as a living memory of the people who once gathered, raised their voices, and demanded fairness. By transforming the mechanical butterfly with batik wings, I wish to preserve not only the fragility and resilience of dissent, but also to remind us that history is not distant—it continues to echo in who we are today.
《The Right to Dissent》
