Match With Batik 5#
Acrylic on canvas 76 x 91cm 2016
In creating “Match With Batik 5#,” I wanted to present more than just a carefully arranged still life; I aimed to compose a visual feast that awakens the senses and evokes memories of my homeland.
My gaze was first drawn to the vitality of these tropical fruits. I am fascinated by their unique forms and textures: the resilient, upright crown of the pineapple, the fine, hair-like feel of the rambutan, the deep, rich hue of the mangosteen, and the soft, bright curve of the banana. To me, they are not merely gifts of nature, but symbols of the tangible and sweet abundance found in daily life. Through my brush, I sought to capture them in their most vibrant and authentic state.
The intensely colored Batik cloth was both the starting point and the foundation for this painting. I allowed it to drape naturally, creating organic folds where light and shadow could play, highlighting the exquisite detail of its traditional patterns. My intention was for it to be more than just a backdrop; I wanted it to be the very soul of the composition. With its soft texture and deep cultural heritage, it embraces and supports the natural forms of the fruit. In my vision, this is a harmonious dialogue between the creations of nature and the artistry of human craftsmanship.
In my handling of light, I deliberately created a strong contrast between light and dark. By using an almost completely black background, I hoped to draw the viewer’s gaze entirely onto the scene before them, allowing them to purely experience the texture, volume, and color of each object. This light is not just for illumination; it is meant to cultivate an atmosphere of tranquility, reverence, and a near-sacred stillness.
For me, “Match With Batik 5#” is an act of preserving a memory, an emotion. I have tried to capture the extraordinary beauty within the ordinary, merging the vibrancy of the fruits with the rich heritage of the Batik. Ultimately, it is my endeavor to solidify this deep affection and respect for my local culture into a single, timeless moment of warmth and serenity.
