Pineapple on Batik 2015
Acrylic on canvas 60cm x 60cm 2015
Pineapple on Batik 2015″ holds a truly special place in my artistic journey. As the very first piece in my fruit series, it represents more than just a still life; it is the foundational stone, the captured moment of inspiration that marked the beginning of a new chapter of creative exploration for me.
I chose the pineapple as the inaugural subject for its proud, almost regal form and its deep cultural resonance here in Malaysia. The pineapple is a potent symbol of warm hospitality and good fortune—its very name in the Hokkien dialect, “ong lai,” is a homophone for “fortune arrives.” Its tough, patterned exterior that protects a sweet, golden interior felt like a fitting metaphor for the artistic process itself.
Placing this symbol of natural abundance upon the vibrant folds of batik fabric was a conscious decision to ground the series in our rich local heritage. The intricate, traditional patterns of the red and blue batik cloths provide a cultural embrace for the fruit. This vibrant scene rests on a weathered, peeling blue ledge, creating a beautiful dialogue between the raw vitality of nature, the enduring legacy of our culture, and the rustic charm of history.
For me, this painting will always be the most meaningful of the series. It is a celebration of new beginnings, a declaration of intent, and a homage to the beautiful and familiar symbols of my home.
